Active Constituents:

Flavonoid glycoside, mucilage, resin, tannin, volatile oil

Medicinal Actions:

Alterative, anti-catarrhal, anti-fungal, anti-pyretic, anti-inflammatory, astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, stimulant

Medicinal Uses:

1)Nearly all the actions of Thuja rise out of its function as a stimulant. It is used to treat productive bronchitis and pneumonia. 

2)It can also be used to reduce the catarrh associated with upper respiratory infections. It is used in inhalent form to treat nasal polyps and post nasal drip of chronic allergies.  It is also used to treat chronic tonsillitis and will reduce the size of the tonsils.

3)It may be better known as a treatment for chronic cystitis or functional nocturnal enuresis.  It is useful not only as an antiseptic, but also to increase the tone of the bladder sphincter thus good for urinary incontinance.

4)Immunostimulatory, if used on depleted people it will deplete them further. Use immunostimulate for a shorter time.

5) It was also used by the eclectics to treat spermatorrhea associated with over-indulgence or excessive masturbation.  It also is useful to treat sexual neurasthenia, or

6) decreased desire and to treat premature ejaculation or anything reguarded for over exhaustion. Especially when pt. Has fatigue post intercourse. Use with verbena . Colaphyllum (blue cohosh).

7) It increases tone and function of the glands and sphincters.  This action is enhanced by combining with Avena or Serenoa. 

8)Thuja is also used to treat chronic skin diseases such as eczema or some presentations of psoriasis. 

9)It has long been used to treat condyloma or papilloma both internal and external due to its. 

10)Historically, Thuja has been used to treat conjunctivitis and pterygium antiHPV activity.  It has also been used for "rheumatism" and gout.

11)Probably the best known use of Thuja is as an anti-cancer remedy.  Historically, it was used both internally and injected into tumors directly.  It is said to both slow the growth of the cancer and to extend the lifespan of the patient.  It is a component of the botanical combination called Vag Pak, used to treat cervical and vaginal cancers and condyloma.

12) It is used as part of the Escharotic treatment plan.  The compound is used in a tampon or a suppository. More information about this plan is available in Tori Hudson, ND's books. 

Contraindications:

Not indicated to use in dry, irritated coughs.  Contraindicated during pregnancy. 

Pharmacy:

            Infusion:         1 tsp/cup water TID

            Tincture (1:5):            3-15 ml QD in divided doses

            Topical:           Warts-cover wart with tincture BID until gone
