Medicinal Use:
Symplocarpus is indicated to treat any spasmodic cough.  It relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and has a mucolytic action that is very effective in treatment of asthma with tenacious mucus. 
It is especially indicated for treatment of any spasmodic cough leading to gagging or vomiting.  Use it to treat asthma, Pertussis, bronchitis.
It is also a diaphoretic, reducing fever and stimulating white blood cell activity.  Symplocarpus is a digestive stimulant, enhancing HCl secretion and the digestive cascade. 
It is mildly sedating, so is helpful in reducing nervous tension or emotional lability, especially expression of fear in patients with asthma and anxiety.
Contraindications:  Pregnancy
Toxicity:  Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea when dosed too high.

Pharmacy:
            Infusion:           ½ tsp/cup infused or decocted
            Powdered Herb:              Mix 1 part powder to 8 parts honey and give ½ to 1 tsp. TID
            Tincture (1:5):  ½ to 1 ml TID – QID
            Fluid Extract (1:1):            1 – 15 drops TID – QID
