Lomatium dissectum (Desert Parsley, Leptotania, Toza Root)

Family:  Umbelliferaea

Part Used:  Root (thus has an earthy taste)

Active Constituents: 

Coumarins, gums, glycosides, resins, saponins, nutrients (ascorbic acid, protein, fat), volatile oils

Medicinal Actions:

Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic, antitussive, anti-viral, expectorant, nutritive

Medicinal Uses:

1)Lomatium is one of our most useful antimicrobials.  It is effective against all types of pathogens. 

2)It has primarily been used for respiratory and urinary system infections.

3) It is effective against gram positive bacteria at a 1:100,000 dilution.  It has been effective against gram negative bacteria at a 1:10,000 dilution.

4) The pathogens it has been shown effective against include shigella, Salmonella typhosa, Candida albicans, Pseudomonis, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pyrogens and Staph viridens.  It has even been partially effective against Neiserria gonorrhea and tuberculosis. 

5)Treat coccidial located in the soil since it is an anti-fungal

6)Expectorant thus good for eliminating stuff from the lung

7)The coumarins also have anti-viral action against DNA and RNA viruses. 

8)Lomatium also has an immunomodulating effect, stimulating the production and activity of white blood cells.  It is an expectorant, enhancing the production and release of mucus from  the respiratory tract and relaxing the mucosa to decrease spasmodic cough.  

9)Because of its high nutrient content, it is also beneficial for those who have chronic fatigue or are depleted from illness. 

10)Good for toothache.

14)Treat chronic fatigue (with other modulating herbs) and fibromyalgia (use it with alternative)

Contraindications:

No interactions known, but some people exhibit a sensitivity and develop a full body rash that resembles Rubeola looks like measles. Or may be isolated to the trunk. It disappears within 6-24 hours of discontinuing the herb.

Pharmacy:

            Decoction:  2 tsp. Herb/Cup water X 15 minutes, 3-6 times per day

            Tincture (1:5) :  20-30 gtt TID-QID

            Tincture (1:2 ) :  10-20 gtt TID-QID
