Active Constituents:

Fixed Oils (Linoleic, linolenic and oleaic acids), glycoside (linamarin), mucilage, protein

Medicinal Actions:

Anti-coagulating, anti-inflammatory, anti-tussive, demulcent, emollient, laxative

Medicinal Uses:

1.Linum, or flax, contains both omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids.  It promotes a lower level of inflammation in the body.  It has some effect at decreasing platelet aggregation, so can lessen the risk of stroke or thrombus formation. 

2.It is often used as a poultice for bronchitis, pleurisy and pneumonia. 

3.It is also used topically to treat inflammatory skin conditions like shingles, psoriasis, boils and carbuncles. 

4.It is a treatment of choice for constipation, especially in children, elderly or depleted patients for whom a laxative would be too draining. 

5.Good as a poultice immune level to help heal wound. Promote immune function

6.Treatment for ulcer of the GI tract and ulcer colimun and duodenum. Irritable bowel syndrome help restore normal contractility of the small intestine

7.High nutrient in the powdered flax seed

8.Could use it for linen

9.Antimicrobial action

10.The seeds and the oil are sensitive to light and heat and should be stored in airtight containers in a cool place or in the refridgerator. 

Contraindications:  None known

Pharmacy:

            Infusion:  2-3 tsp. Seeds/Cup water X10-15 minutes BID

            Tincture:  2-5 ml TID

            Poultice:  Use mashed seeds, thin cloth and apply with heat to drive into skin
