Part Used:  Gum, resin

Medicinal Constituents:

Gum, resin, volatile oil

Medicinal Actions:

Anti-catarrhal, antiseptic, astringent, carminative, expectorant, sialagogue (clearing and cleansing action), stimulant, vulnerary 

Medicinal Uses:

1)This plant, like Frankincense, has been used for centuries. Commiphora supports immune function both by stimulating production of white blood cells and by a direct anti-microbial action.

2)It has been used historically for infection and inflammation of the mucous membranes.  Therefore, it has been used to treat stomatitis, gingivitis, tonsillities, pharyngitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal inflammation and infection.

3)It is also used topically for healing of inflammation and infection such as boils, wounds and abrasions.

Contraindications:

Large doses can be emetic.

Pharmacy:

            Infusion:  Can only be done with powdered resin due to difficulty in dissolution in water. 

                          1-2 tsp powder/c. H2O X 15 minutes

            Tincture (1:5, 1:10) :  1 to 4 ml TID or 15-30 drops TID
