Collinsonia is best known as an anti-lithic that aids in the passage of renal
and urinary calculi. It relaxes the
smooth muscle to allow passage of stones.
It may also reduce the size of stones as they process through the
system.
It also is astringent and tonifying to the mucosa and smooth muscle of the
gastrointestinal tract. It can be used
to reduce spasm or colic in IBS. It
also stimulates the secretion of HCl, thus stimulating appetite and
peristalsis. It has a soothing effect
on the nervous system, reducing anxiety and spasm when nervous tension causes
visceral spasm.
It is useful in conditions present with pelvic atony like hemorrhoids. It increases circulation through the venous
system. Therefore, it is useful to
treat any disease of pelvic atony like amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia,
pruritis vulvae, spermatorrhea, varicocele and hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids benefit from both internal and
external application.
