Breastfeeding how-to

Breastfeeding involves more than popping your baby onto your breast and letting nature take its course. For many first-time moms, nursing is a mystery. How exactly do you do it without pain? What's the correct way to get your baby latched on to ensure breastfeeding success? To learn the proper technique, follow these six simple steps: Photos by Jeb Wallace-Brodeur

Line up your baby's nose to your nipple. Then tickle the edge of your baby's mouth with your finger or nipple to encourage your child to latch on.

Wait until your baby's mouth opens wide before inserting the nipple squarely into it.

Make sure your baby gets a large mouthful of the underside of your nipple, encircling almost, if not the entire areola.

The best latch-on position is when your baby's mouth is splayed against the breast.

As your baby nurses contentedly, hold him close.

Done properly, breastfeeding can be a pleasant experience for you and your baby.
